I would say Gardner's book isn't so much about writing in any point of view, but about trying to get writers to think like writers. He can be a bit moralistic at times, but it's a classic and definitely worth reading.
By now - or a while back, come to think on it - now it’s maybe gone, I could have recited Stoner from memory. Thanks for sharing this perspective on it which gives me an excuse (if I needed one) to revisit it with fresh eyes.
I'm glad you enjoyed this piece, and thanks for commenting! Stoner is an incredible book. I may have to re-read it myself. This morning I was thinking of how it reminds me of Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich—there's another one I should revisit.

Fascinating read and excellent use of photos!
Thanks!
Thanks for the sensitive examination. My takeaway is never expect the reader to come to you. The writer must go to them.
Great advice!
Thanks Tina. This is excellent!
I've never read Gardner's book on writing. It seems to have excellent reviews. Would you say it's a good book on handling the omniscient view?
